OSG Starts Production Test with Waste Cooking Oil

OSG (Aichi, Japan) has started a demonstration experiment of various types of machining with machine tools using vegetable-derived waste cooking oil, the first of its kind in Japan, at its Yana Plant (Shinshiro City), a tap tool manufacturing plant, this spring.
After conducting tests on rough thread rolling in the pre-process of tapping, the company will move on to verification in the cutting process.

This time, in response to a user's request for a test, the company started a demonstration test using a part of the Yana Plant. The person in charge of manufacturing technology at the Yana Plant said, "We will continue to make various improvements to the product. We have made a number of improvements while conducting the demonstration tests, and so far the results have been good, and there have been no problems with the quality of the tools used in machining"

Jiro Osawa, the managing director of the project, says enthusiastically, "It will be difficult to replace all mineral oil, which is inexpensive and is used in large quantities, but we would like to gradually reduce the use of mineral oil and promote the recycling of waste cooking oil to become more environmentally friendly"

By removing impurities from the waste cooking oil and mixing multiple types of waste cooking oil, the new product will be used as a lubricating oil that conforms to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS).

The cost is slightly higher than that of mineral oil, but the flash point of the oil is higher than that of mineral oil, making it less flammable and reducing the risk of fire. Also, since it is derived from plants, it is gentler on workers, leading to an improved working environment.

The Japanese government has also set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to virtually zero (carbon neutral) by 2050, and the recycling of waste cooking oil will contribute to reducing the use of mineral oil.
